A survey of young people's social participation before the YDF
The survey was developed as part of the D-EFFECT project, carried out in line with the Youth Strategy 2022–2027, and aims to study and strengthen young people’s social participation in democratic life and civic activities. It seeks to understand the needs, expectations, and motivations of youth for active engagement in public life, with the goal of better preparing the Youth Democratic Festival (YDF).
The survey covers key aspects of youth engagement. Participants assess their past involvement in events such as youth congresses, debates, and public consultations, and identify what could motivate them more - such as better access to information, co-decision-making, attractive event formats, or meetings with inspiring figures. The survey also examines preferred forms of activity, including debates, workshops, networking, and social projects, as well as the perceived impact of young people on local decision-making.
Other questions address the availability of information on engagement opportunities, the most important topics for youth (such as climate, education, human rights, local politics, and mental health), and the types of guests they would like to see at events - local politicians, social activists, or influencers. Respondents also share their opinions on preferred event locations, ranging from large halls to smaller venues or cultural spaces.
The survey is anonymous, encouraging honest responses. The collected data will serve as a foundation for creating policies and actions that better align with the real needs of young people. Its purpose is not only to gather opinions but also to assess the situation of local youth in terms of their participation in public life. This will enable organisers to better tailor the festival to participants’ expectations, minimise risks and challenges, and more effectively evaluate the entire initiative after its completion. The approach aims to create a lasting platform for dialogue and collaboration between young people and decision-makers, ensuring that even potential participants have a say in shaping the festival.
