D-EFFECT Develops a Model for Organising Youth Democracy Festivals Across the Baltic Sea Region
Partners of the international D-EFFECT project have developed a comprehensive checklist designed to streamline the organisation of Youth Democracy Festivals and support their effective implementation across countries in the Baltic Sea region. The tool structures the entire process - from planning and promotion to evaluation and dissemination of results - while strengthening the role of young people in civic and democratic participation.
The international D-EFFECT project is entering another crucial phase aimed at standardizing and scaling up the Youth Democracy Festival methodology. As part of an activity focused on the practical preparation and coordination of cross-border events, the project consortium has developed a comprehensive checklist tool. This tool ensures that no essential step is overlooked, allowing the developed solutions to be successfully replicated and adapted by other regions and organizations across the South Baltic Area-from Denmark and Sweden, to Lithuania, Poland, and Germany.
This checklist serves as a common operational framework, facilitating planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation at local, regional, and international levels. The entire process is divided into several phases that precisely guide organizers from the initial concept to the final dissemination of results.
Everything begins with defining the themes and goals, which must be decided directly by young people themselves to ensure a strong sense of ownership. The tool requires a clear definition of the target audience, scheduling event dates to avoid school exams or holidays, and meticulously planning all logistics. Organizers must secure a safe venue, arrange technical setups, and take care of practical aspects like catering, volunteer recruitment, and sponsor agreements. The checklist also places high emphasis on marketing, creating engaging communication materials, and inviting politicians and the press well in advance.
Equally critical is the implementation phase and what happens after the festival concludes. The tool guides organizers through documentation and evaluation, recommending modern feedback methods such as surveys accessible via QR codes. The insights gathered are then synthesized into reports, published on websites, and shared with decision-makers. As a result, these democracy festivals transform from one-off happenings into a resilient, flexible system for building youth capacity.
